Coach/Volunteer Registration

Thanks for participating as a coach and/or volunteer for MSHA!

This page contains many useful links to help you complete your certification as a coach or volunteer.   Here is a quick list of the items that need to be completed:

Step 1: Register at USA Hockey - During this registration coaches and on-ice volunteers should select player/coach as the registration type while all others can select the volunteer option.

Click here to Register on USA Hockey!

Step 2: Register on the MSHA site - this registration will allow us to register you on the state site and determine which certification steps you have completed or will need to complete.

Click here to Register on MSHA!

Once you have completed these two registrations, you will receive an email letting you know which certification steps you are required to complete for the current year.  Here is a list of these items:

  • Background screening (Coaches & Volunteers) - Background checks are submitted through the state site and are good for two years. You will need to log in on the SDAHA site using the same credentials that you use for the MSHA site.  Please note, if two members of the same household are registering as volunteers, they will EACH need their own username and password.

  • Safe Sport Certification (Coaches & Volunteers) - Safe Sport certifications are good for one year.  The first year, the full course must be completed but subsequent years only require an abbreviated refresher course . After the 3rd refresher course, you will be required to complete the initial course again.

You will need to create separate login credentials for this course.  These credentials are different than those used for the Coaching Clinic registration and Age Specific module registration. There are multiple sections to this course and once you have completed all sections, you will receive your certificate of completion.  It is easy to miss a section in this course so please verify that you have completed ALL sections!

NOTE FOR 2023 - SafeSport has transitioned from a seasonal recertification to an annual basis. So instead of recertifying prior to the season, your SafeSport certification will be valid for 12 months and you will get a notice 30 days prior to the expiration of your current certification. You will not be able to renew your certification until you receive a renewal notice. If you log into SafeSport Training and do not see a SafeSport course (step 5 of the guide below), your renewal period is not yet open.

  • Coaching Clinics (Coaches only) - Coaches are required to attend a coaching clinic to be added to a team roster. Level 1 and Level 2 certifications are valid for one year. Level 3 certifications are valid for two years may be renewed online two times (meaning you can stay at a Level 3 certification for six years if desired). A Level 4 certification does not expire. At this time, only online (virtual) clinics are being held.  You will need to log in to register for a clinic. These credentials are different than those used for the Safe Sport certification and the Age Specific Modules registration. Because of COVID-19, a new temporary card is also available if you are unable to attend an online clinic.  It is good for one year and will allow new coaches a temporary level 1 certification and returning coaches a one year extension.  The following year, new coaches will need to attend a Level 1 clinic and returning coaches will need to attend the clinic required based on their current level certification.

  • Age Specific Modules (Coaches & On-Ice Volunteers) - In addition to the coaching clinic, coaches must complete modules specific to the age level they are coaching. These can be completed right away. You do not need to wait until you have completed your coaching clinic. You will need log in credentials on the USA Hockey site to register and complete these modules.  These credentials are different than those used for the Safe Sport certification and the Coaching Clinic registration.
